Consulting

Thank you for checking out my church and religious organization consulting page.

After working with 2,000 business and religious organizations, I’ve noticed that businesses and government are over-managed and under-led. But churches and religious organizations are usually over-led and under-managed. While their leaders (even in smaller churches) usually have big visions, they struggle with the organizational systems and people management that prevent their vision from turning into reality. That’s where I can help.

Though I spend most of my time working with businesses, I’m also an ordained minister who has worked in small rural churches, planted a church, and served in a rapidly growing megachurch. I’ve taken those experiences and now apply them on a limited basis to consulting with churches and religious organizations. It’s the intersection of 25 years of business consulting, training, and firsthand experience at each size of church that my clients find most helpful.

I can talk the language of the business people on your board as well as your student minister. I understand that no two churches are the same, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach, although all of them go through similar struggles. And I get that scores of business tools and techniques can help churches lead and manage better, but they have to be adjusted for the unique culture of your particular church or religious organization.

The churches I’ve helped with plateaus have added 11,000 people to their average weekly attendance.

“As a church consultant, Haydn Shaw brings reality to strategy planning that moves leaders and lay members into new areas of application of their gifts and skills.”
—Carl F. George, church growth consultant, mentor, and author of Prepare Your Church for the Future

What Churches Ask Me To Do

Identify and work through plateaus that hold back growth.

Churches I’ve helped with plateaus have added 11,000 people to their average weekly attendance.

Reach all five generations.

I help churches figure out how to:

  • reach Millennials and Gen Xers
  • determine if their church should attempt to make the changes necessary to reach the younger generations
  • cut the dropout rate of 18-28 year olds by half
  • help families pass on their faith
  • prepare large churches for the coming challenge with the Baby Boomers
  • answer the rest of the ten questions Christians worry about.

Lead through change.

I help churches transition to reach younger generations without losing the older members. And I teach staff how to lead through the six reactions people have toward change so that the change is quicker and less painful using my workshops Leading Through the 6 Change Reactions and

Resolve conflict.

I often get asked to facilitate conflicts among staff or staff and church boards.

Maximize staff.

Through my consulting work, I:

  • teach leadership and management skills
  • help church staff transition from doing the work to creating leaders and equipping laypeople to accomplishing the work
  • create alternative staffing structures when the staff is stretched too thin and tensions mount or growth plateaus

Plan for the future.

Churches I’ve worked with:

  • crystallize their vision.
  • turn that vision into reality through a repeatable growth goalsetting process.

What leaders say about my work with their churches

Get beyond growth barriers

When we hit 1,250, I told Haydn his job was to keep us ahead of the coming growth barriers. The reason we’ve been one of the fastest-growing churches in America and kept people developing spiritually as well as we have is because he did exactly that. I’m a guy who sees a problem and can fix it. I needed someone around me who could anticipate the next problem and help me know what to do before it blew up.
— Tim Harlow, pastor, Parkview Christian Church, Orland Park, Illinois

I brought in Haydn to help us prepare for moving into a new building. He did that, as well as help us realign our mission, vision, values, staff, and entire church culture. Six years later and we still quote Haydn Shaw! Working with him was one of the greatest catalysts to our growth.
— Rusty George, pastor, Real Life Church, Valencia, California

Develop Staff and Board

Our church leaders hired Haydn to help us through the landmines as we adopted an “elder governance” model. With Haydn’s expertise, we were able to rebuild trust and develop a leadership structure that propelled us forward to an exciting season of spiritual health and growth.
— Rick Grover, about Owensboro Christian Church, Owensboro, Ky

Work through conflicts

River Glen had hit the 1,200 barrier. I was overstretched, our staff divided, longtime members complained that the church was too big to care anymore, and none of us were having fun. Haydn helped us reorganize for growth, work through the changes, and start having fun again. We’ve been growing ever since.
— Ben Davis, pastor, River Glen Christian Church, Waukesha, WI
